Prafulla Kumar Chaki

Last updated: 10 October 2017 From the section Khudiram Basu

Prafulla Kumar Chaki was only a year older than Khudiram Basu. He was born on 10 December 1888 at Bihar village of Bogra District in Rangpur Division of present-day Bangladesh. Son of Rajnarayan and Swarnamoyee, Prafulla Chaki belonged to a middle class Hindu Kayastha family. He was the youngest of five children. His father Rajnarayan was an employee of the Bogra nawab family who sadly died when Prafulla was only an infant. As such Prafulla was raised by his mother and attended a primary school in his village. He was known to be a 'meek and docile' lad by his neighbours https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=G4JuAAAAMAAJ&q=Prafulla+Rangpur+National+School&dq=Prafulla+Rangpur+National+School&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjYlovk7IbXAhWCXhoKHZRXAK0Q6AEIPTAF.

Born of a quiet religious family, the youngest of the five childien of late Rajnarain Chaki of Bogra, Prafulla was thoughtful and dedicative from his childhood.

Expelled from school for demonstration and become a young Swadeshi leader of Bogra-Rangpur

In 1904, 15-year-old Prafulla travelled north to Rangpur and got himself admitted into Rangpur Zilla School. Here he joined the 'Bandhab Samiti', a local organisation for physical exercise and socio-cultural activities. While a student of fourth class, equivalent to present day Class IX (9), Chaki was expelled from the school for taking part in the students' demonstrations violating the Carlyle Circular of the government of East Bengal and Assam during the Partition of Bengal Movement.

Having got expelled from Rangpur Zilla School, Prafulla joined the Rangpur National School, Bengal's first institute of national education https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=G4JuAAAAMAAJ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjYlovk7IbXAhWCXhoKHZRXAK0Q6AEIPTAF. Several 'national' schools were setup throughout Bengal to provide schooling for those students who were expelled and employment for teachers who were dismissed.

Behind the rise of these national schools there was an avowedly anti-government feeling created by the partition of Bengal. They therefore became centres of political activity. Teachers were often leaders of the district who had been dismissed from aided or recognised schools by their school committees. Some of them even started their own national schools. The position of these teachers was not very happy financially, since they had to depend on their pay on alms collected in public places by their pupils.

Prafulla was a well known and widely loved boy at Rangpur National School. He came in contact with revolutionary activists like Jitendranarayan Roy, Abinash Chakravarti, Ishan Chandra Chakravarti and became a revolutionary convert. During this period Barindra Kumar Ghosh visited Rangpur in 1906 and 1907. He was highly impressed by number of young men there. Among them was Prafulla Chaki, Prafulla Chakravarty, Krishnajiban Sanyal, to name a few. Prafulla Chaki was introduced to Barin Ghosh, who brought him to Calcutta.

One of Chaki's early task was to gun down the Lieutenant Governor of East Bengal and Assam, Bamfylde Fuller, at Darjeeling during one of Fuller's visit. But the tour programme was changed and hence the plan did not materialise.
