1. Iman (Faith)

The first quality was the quality of Iman.

The kalima Lailaha Illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah means that there is none worthy of worship but Allah and Muhammed Sallallahu alaihi wasallam is the messenger of Allah.

The Sahabas (Prophet's Companions, Radiallahu anhum - May Allah be Pleased with them) strove in the path of Allah to strengthen their yaqeen (belief) that Allah Ta’ala does everything without the help of the creation, and the creation can do nothing without the help of Allah Ta’ala. They also strengthened their yaqeen that ONLY in following the life style of Nabi Karim Sallallahu alaihi wasallam will a person be successful. All other ways of life will bring failure to a person not only in this world but also in the grave and the hereafter.

Allah Wills everything

To become consciously aware of the fact that Allah is al-Musabbib al-asbab (the Cause of causes). To be certain that whatever is happening through a “cause” is not in reality originating from it, but rather, is happening only because Allah has willed it. For example, water is dependant on the hukm (command) of Allah to quench thirst. Also, to cure, medication is contingent on Allah’s hukm. Likewise, the human heart depends on the hukm of Allah to pulsate and nourish cells throughout the body. Similarly, without Allah commanding it to, the universe is devoid of any power or ability to exist.

He who accepts from me the Kalima, which I presented to my uncle (Abu Talib at the time of his death) and he rejected it, this (acceptance) will be a means for his salvation.

Abu Bakr (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

Power of the Kalimah

Indeed, I know a Kalima which if recited by a dying man, will be a means of solace for his departing soul and will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection (this Kalima is La ilaha illa’llah).

Talha ibne ‘Ubaidullah (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

This kalima is so valuable that if a person recites it 100 times a day, his face will shine like the 14th moon on the day of Qiyamah.

We need to live our 24 hour way of life according to the sunnat of our beloved Nabi Karim Sallallahu alaihi wasallam. He has shown us a complete way of life, how to eat, how to sleep, even how to go to the toilet. If we do all these things according to the sunnat of our Nabi Karim Sallallahu alaihi wasallam then we will be rewarded. A person, who revives one Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu alaihi wasallam during the time of fitnah and fasaad, will get the reward of 1 shaheed, or some narrations 100 shaheeds. A shaheed is that person who fought in the path of Allah Ta’ala, and before his first drop of blood touches the ground, all his sins are forgiven.

To obtain the reality of this kalima, a person must daily invite towards this kalima and he must also make dua that Allah Ta’ala places the reality of this kalima into our hearts. Also give sit in Fazail Taleem, to learn the virtues of this Kalimah and recite this Kalimah as much as possible.

2. Salaat (Prayer)

The second quality which the Sahaba possessed was the quality of salaah. The first and foremost thing ordained by Allah Ta’ala after Iman was salaah, and the first thing to be reckoned for on the day of Qiyamah will be salaah.

The objective of Salaat is twofold

  1. that one prays in both the inward and outward manners that the Sahaba learnt from the Messenger of Allah (SAW), for the hadith states, “Pray as you have observed me pray” i.e. to become direct recipients from the Treasuries of Allah.

Salaah is a means by which a person comes closer to Allah Ta’ala, and also a means of taking from the treasures of Allah Ta’ala.

Salaah is the greatest practical pillar of Islam and khushoo (concentration) in salaah is required by Islam. Khushoo means calmness, concentration, humility, and bring present-minded while performing prayers. Fear of Allah (swt) is the most important cause of khushoo. One should think that they are in front of Allah (Martaba-e-Ihsaan) or if he cannot do this then think that Allah is watching over him.

The key to Paradise is Salaat and the key to Salaat is Wudu’.

Jabir ibne ‘Abdullah (RA) narrates that the Prophet (SAW) said:

Abu Qatadah ibne-Rib’i (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) narrates in a Hadith Qudsi [Sacred Hadith] that Allah ‘Azza wa Jall has said:

Verily, I have enjoined upon your Ummah five times Salaat, and I have taken upon myself an oath that anyone who observes them at their appointed time, I shall admit him into Paradise; if anyone does not offer them regularly, there is no such guarantee from Me for him.


There is no (perfect) Iman for the one who has no trustworthiness, and there is no Salaat for the one who has no Wudu’, and there is no Deen for one who has no Salaat. The status of Salaat in Deen is like the status of the head in a body.

Ibne ‘Umar (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

Nafl namaz strenghthens khushoo

To acquire concentration in salaah, a person must perform long rakaats of nafl Salaah with presence of mind and heart, khushoo’, awe, humility, fear and hope, thereby making it one’s mi’raj. Once daily he should pray 2 rakaats nafil Salaat in such a way that he only remembers Allah (SWT) from the beginning to the end. Also give Dawat on Salaat and sit in Fazail Taleem, to learn the virtues of Salaat.

3. Ilm/Zikr (Rememberance)

The purpose of ‘ilm is twofold

  1. that one becomes able to differentiate between halal [the permissible] and haraam [the impermissible], [ritual] purity and [ritual] impurity, legitimacy and illegitimacy, pertaining to all aspects of one’s life.
  2. to know at any given moment – in one’s twenty-four hour existence – what Allah wants of him or her. This is known as hal ka ‘amr pehchan-na [recognizing the command relating to the present].

The best among you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it.

‘Uthman ibne ‘Affan (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

O Abu Dharr! If you go in the morning and learn a verse from the Book of Allah, it is better for you than performing one hundred Rakaats of Salaat. And if you go in the morning and learn a chapter of knowledge, which may or may not be applicable at that time (for example learning the method of Tayyammum), it is better for you than performing a thousand Rakaats of Nafl Salaat.

Abu Dharr (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) told me:

He who goes to the masjid, not desiring anything other than learning or teaching something good, his reward is like that of a Hajji [Pilgrim] who performs a complete Hajj [Islamic Pilgrimage].

Abu Umamah (RA) narrates that the Prophet (SAW) said:

Knowledge is of two types: 1. Knowledge that penetrates into the heart; this knowledge is beneficial. 2. Knowledge that is merely on the tongue; this will be Allah’s evidence against the son of Adam.

Jabir (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

For the Fazail [virtues] one must participate in the taalim of the masjid and one must also make taalim at home. For the masaail we should ask the Ulama.

All the creation of Allah makes the zikr of Allah

The objective of dhikr is to achieve – at each moment in one’s earthly existence – a conscious awareness, nearness, a ta’aluq [relationship] and marifa [knowledge] of Allah.

Allah, the Exalted has said:

So remember Me, I will remember you…

(Quran, 2:152);

So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion.

(Quran, 73:8)

…Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!

(Quran, 13:28);

Man who is the best of creation must also make the zikr of Allah. The one who makes the zikr of Allah is like a living person and the one who does not make the zikr of Allah is like a dead person. Zikr creates the consciousness of Allah, that Allah is all- seeing and al- hearing. A person who remembers Allah after Fajr salaah and after Asr salaah is like a person who makes zikr of Allah all day long.

Abu Hurairah (RA) reports that the Nabi (SAW) in a Hadith Qudsi narrated that Allah the Almighty and Majestic says:

I am with my slave when he remembers me and till his lips move while remembering me.


There are four characteristics of such nature that one who has been blessed with them has been blessed with what is the best in this world and the Hereafter: 1) A thankful heart, 2) A tongue which remembers Allah, 3) A body which endures hardships and 4) A wife who does not desire to breach the trust of her husband or squander his wealth.

Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) narrates that the Prophet (SAW) said:

Make a habit of reciting the third kalima, durood shareef and istighfaar 100 times each after the Fajr and Asr salaah. This should ideally be done with Wudh’ in Attahiyat position facing the Qiblah, slowing praying with presence of heart and mind, concentrating on the words being uttered.

Read a portion of the Quran everyday and the masnoon duas on the relevant occasions.

4. Ikram (Respect)

The purpose of ikram al-Muslim is that one’s dealings – with all the rest of the Ummah (and by extension, all of creation) – be based on love, compassion, honour, generosity and respect. Instead of demanding them, one should not only forgo his or her rights, but become deeply concerned with giving others at least their due (rights stipulated by the Sacred Law).

La ilaha illa’llah, how pure you are, and how sweet your fragrance, and how great your honour! However the honour of a Mu’min [believer] is greater than yours.

Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) looked at the Ka’ba and said:

Indeed, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has made you respectable; (likewise) the wealth, the blood, and the honour of a Mu’min has been made respectable; and Allah has forbidden us to suspect him of wrongdoing.

Anyone with these three qualities shall be under the shade of Allah’s Mercy (on the Day of Resurrection) and will be admitted into Paradise: 1) Courtesy towards the weak, 2) Compassion to parents 3) Kindness to slaves (subordinates).

Jabir (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

Musa ibn Imran (RA) said: O my Lord! Who is the most respectable slave to you? Allah the Almighty and Majestic replied: He who forgives, despite having the power to avenge.

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

A person who fulfils the need of a Muslim brother, Allah Ta’ala will grant him 73 rewards. 72 will be kept in the aakhirah, and with the one reward, Allah will fulfil all his needs of the world.

This objective can be achieved by respecting one’s elders, showing kindness to the young, and honoring the Ulama. Whether one is dealing with one’s spouse, family, relatives, friends or acquaintances, to always put the other ahead of oneself. At all times we should be ready to sacrifice one’s own desires for another.

5. Ikhlaas (Sincerity)

For every act, one must check one’s intention that it is only for the pleasure of Allah.

A date given in the path of Allah for the pleasure of Allah will earn great rewards in the hereafter. On the other hand if a person gave a great sum of money for the sake of show, then he will be taken to task on the day of Qiyaamah.

Indeed Allah does not look at your faces and possessions, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

Note: It means the decision of Allah’s pleasure will not be based upon your faces and possessions, but upon your hearts and deeds as to how much sincerity was in you heart.

Verily, Allah does not accept any deed, except that done sincerely for Him and to obtain His pleasure.

Abu Umamah al-Bahili (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

Undoubtedly upon resurrection, people will be treated according to their intentions.

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

Ikhlaas is the last thing to come into a person’s life and the first thing to leave.

The achievement of the abovementioned objective can be strongly helped by checking one’s intention before, during and after every act. If one finds any motive other than seeking Divine pleasure, one must immediately repent and correct one’s intention. By constantly repenting and removing any ulterior motives, one’s intentions will become progressively more sincere, Inshallah [God-willing].

6. Dawat (Call to Truth)

The objective of dawah and tabligh is twofold

  1. (i) that in addition to oneself, all of humanity until the Day Reckoning embodies the first five of the Six Points.
  2. (ii) that all of humanity attains salvation, that it [humanity] is saved from the torment of the Fire, and enters the Garden [Paradise].

All of the prophets (upon them be peace) were given a task. That is to call humanity to their Creator. Each prophet was sent to a specific people, calling them to the worship of the one God.

…We sent no messenger before thee but We inspired him, (saying): There is no god save Me (Allah), so worship Me.

for the Quran declares:

Those who accepted the call of La ilaha illa’llah, attained success; and those who rejected it, failed.

I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) saying: To be in the Path of Allah, for a short while, is better than worshipping on the night of al-Qadr in front of Hajar al-Aswad (the Black Stone).

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates:

The Sahaba Radiallahu anhum strove in the path of Allah Ta’ala to elevate the name of Allah. To uphold the Deen of Allah, they went through great difficulties. Some of them made their wives widows and their children orphans. There were days when some of the Sahaba had no food in their homes.

Nabi Sallallahu alaihi wasallam and the Sahaba Radiallahu anhum watered the garden of Islam with their blood. Today our elders want us to sacrifice only a little of our sweat in the path of Allah. Alhamdulillah with the effort of jamaat, extremely great changes are occurring throughout the world. Hence, let us also give some time in the path of Allah to bring Deen into our lives and into the lives of the whole of mankind till the day of Qiyaamah.

So that each Muslim may realize his potential, the Akabir have devised a plan: to spend four months in the path of Allah – in one’s lifetime – to acquire the necessary skills to carry out the work of Dawah and Tabligh; to spend forty days each year; three days every month; on Thursday nights to visit the local Markaz for the Shab-e-Jumu’ah [Eve of Friday] gathering; to take part in two [one, for one’s own neighbourhood, and the other, for the adjacent neighbourhood] of the gasht gatherings [i.e. to perform tadhkira [reminders] to fellow Muslims by visiting their houses]; and to conduct two daily halaqahs [circles] of Taleem [education] – one each, in one’s local mosque, and home.
